HAPPY NEW YEAR
EAB praises God for another year of service completed for the Kingdom in 2009, principally in north-eastern Brazil. We thank all who pray for the Mission and financially support it. May God bless you.

2009 was not the easiest of years but the 5% growth in the churches plus 25,000 people helped through the projects are indicators of the progress made.

We now look to another year ahead of us with all its challenges and opportunities. To start with please especially pray for the Action School training workshop on January 5th-6th at Patos and the Special 10-day evangelistic outreach, with a team of 60+, from January 8th to 18th at Conceição.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

From the sweltering December heat in north-east Brazil EAB's team of directors, pastors and project workers send you warmest Christmas greetings thanking one and all for their support and prayers throughout another year.

Church activities are intense at this time with the Patos Bible College Graduation on the 19th, and special Christmas and New Years services on the 24th and 31st, on top of the regular services. People seem to be more aware of the importance of God, as one year comes to an end and another begins, and we endeavour to lead as many to Christ (the centre of Christmas) at this time.

Uruguay
With Betânia’s move to Pando, Uruguay, at the end of November, 2009, and the arrival of a team of 4 from Brazil on December 1st, the work has a new positive tone in Uruguay. One of the team of 4, Nadja Oliveira, will be staying with Betânia until the end of May, 2010, after the other team members return to Brazil for Christmas.

Initially Betânia has introduced the visiting team to Uruguay, whose members all have a basic knowledge of Spanish, and they have planned together the activities the visiting team will be involved in.

God is opening up doors to Brazil’s southern neighbours. Betânia has been there a year now and it is fairly easy for other workers and support teams to move in and out of the region from Brazil. This project is the fruit of networking ACEV, EAB and BCLC in South Wales. During the first year BCLC funded the project 100%, but in 2010 EAB/ACEV will need to fund at least half the project. The exact cost of this is to be defined more precisely than previously by Pastor Wostenes next month.

Workshop

Last week,  Patos Bible College Workshop on HIV/AIDS was superb. We gathered the whole college at the Independent Presbyterian church, which is close to the college, and what an excellent workshop we had! It was led by EAB/ACEV's social worker and HIV/AIDS project leader, Marah Danielle, together with her team composed of Lila, Jucineide and Márcia.

Straight after the workshop a 1st Baptist leader came and asked if the workshop could be done with their youth at his church? Of course our answer was yes, or rather, YES! It is wonderful to see this project, which is not a full 10 months old, taking off and making a profound impact in the interior of our State of Paraíba already. It is changing the image of the Evangelical church before the authorities who when they first heard of our project said, "Oh no! Not evangelicals and HIV!” The evangelicals are the group that has most messed up our HIV programme by telling people not to take the medicine but to be healed only through prayer.

Different kind of opportunity
A birthday party in Patos became a great evangelistic opportunity. A young member of the EAB/ACEV Patos church, called Wellington, celebrated last Saturday his 32nd birthday and his 3rd one as a Christian. Wellington started wild partying from the age of 15 and was soon into heavy drinking. He survived a series of motorbike accidents under the influence of alcohol. In one he caused the death of a person he hit and to recover from another he needed a lot of plastic surgery to his face. 3 years ago someone managed to get him to come to the church. He came “just to be sociable” and the Gospel hit him between the eyes and transformed his life. He celebrated his birthday by holding a service in the street outside his house. He invited all his relations, and supported by our church he testified and preached to the lot! They all listened intently because they could not deny that somebody had dramatically changed the man’s life from one of recklessness to righteousness. That person’s name is Jesus. PTL! His story is going to be printed in a local magazine! PTL!

Leadership Conference
With the annual EAB/ACEV Leadership Conference only a few days away, we are rushed off our feet with the preparations. Please remember the event in prayer which will last from Wednesday, September 16th, to Sunday September the 20th.It will be held as always at Green Patures farm. Liz is slowly recovering from her fractured ankle so will be limited of what she can do at the conference. Please pray for her too. In general the work is going well. Seven were baptized at Imaculada last Sunday, where Pastor John Medcraft was preaching.

EAB's work expanding on many fronts
EAB's primary school in Patos has just had a classroom added and a dining area. It is a joy to see the children so happy with their refurbished and extended school.

The EAB/ACEV HIV/AIDS Project is also developing well. The project team, lead by the social worker Marah Daniele, has formed a partnership with the Town Council which is very happy to get help in this difficult and delicate field of work.

At Campina Grande another large group of new converts have been baptized so in all we have much to praise God about.

Floods and not drought!
All EAB supporters know of the constant droughts we face here in the semi-arid interior of northeasten Brazil. It will come as a surprise to hear of the opposite. It is true that we are in the rainy season but ot have had 12 inches of rain in six hours in Patos was quite catastrophic leaving nearly 2.500 people with their homes flooded, furniture ruined, food and clothing lost, etc. It was amazing that nobody was drowned as the rushing torrents through streets and houses were devastating in destroying some houses and badly damaging others.

EAB has been very active in the rescue and support of the victims of the flood from the night it all started. Some of our young men were quite heroic in snatching people from the waters and the following day EAB arrived before local government with food, clothes, hugs, prayers and every type of necessary support. This work is on-going and the EAB KMG Care Center, as always, has been pivotal in ministering God's love and compassion into many devastated and traumatized lives. We value your prayers.

Wells
We continue to receive a very positive feedback from the Carnival Camp which gathered 400 people for fellowship, fun and teaching. See photos in the photo gallery.

We are inaugurating wells at the moment with thanksgiving services at each community and an official giving over of each well to the people. These occasions are always so joyful and full of testimonies with the presence of local authorities too. They are occasions of real witness to God's love and care.

Carnival Camp
Hundreds of people will be gathering over the Brazilian Carnival period for the traditional EAB Carnival Camp which has been held at Green Pastures Farm for the past 30 years. The camp will last from Sarurday (Feb 21st) to Wednesday (Feb 25).

This year's teaching will be on "True Prosperity" and will seek to combat the prevalent prosperity theology so widespread in modern day evangelical churches and will seek to point everyone to a more balanced and Biblical understanding of the subject.

There will be lots of fun, swimming, sport, praise and fellowship. Please pray for this EAB Camp.
